for some a dream island and holiday paradise, for others a symbol of animals wiped out by humans. Today, we only know the dodo from guest appearances in blockbuster films such as ‘Ice Age’ or the popular board game ‘Paleo’. The fruit-eating, chubby giant pigeon didn’t have much to fear on Mauritius until the 17th century – which is why the up to 17-kilo, one-metre-long ratite with its strikingly large beak could afford to be flightless and quite trusting. However, this proved to be a real problem after the arrival of the Europeans in 1598.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” The nearest large land mass is Madagascar, which lies 870 kilometres to the west. It is an even 2000 kilometres to the African coast and 4000 to India, making Mauritius an ideal stopover for the early European seafarers to eat something fresh and take provisions on board – and the dodos were the biggest thing the island had to offer (besides the giant tortoises, which were also wiped out). Accordingly, they were hunted intensively. However, the real catastrophe came in the wake of the Europeans: cats, rats, dogs, pigs – they all preyed on the birds or destroyed their nests. This is how the dodo became extinct. As a result, it became an almost mystical animal. The pain of loss is great. Its presence in the national coat of arms of Mauritius bears witness to this to this day. Work is now underway to revive the iconic birds one day through genetic engineering.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”187686″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”592321″]Invasion![/vc_custom_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”” override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”” top_padding=”” bottom_padding=”” overlay_alpha=”” gutter_size=”” column_width_percent=”” shift_y=”” z_index=”” top_divider=”” bottom_divider=”” style=”inherited” uncode_shortcode_id=”133485″ el_class=”gross_navigation_innen”][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ align_horizontal=”align_center” gutter_size=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ zoom_width=”0″ zoom_height=”0″ width=”1/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”143018″][vc_gallery el_id=”gallery-12″ type=”carousel” medias=”140791,140793,140795,140797,140799,140801″ carousel_lg=”1″ carousel_md=”1″ carousel_sm=”1″ thumb_size=”sixteen-nine” gutter_size=”0″ media_items=”media|nolink|original,description,caption” carousel_type=”fade” carousel_interval=”0″ carousel_navspeed=”400″ carousel_loop=”yes” carousel_nav=”yes” carousel_dots=”yes” carousel_dots_mobile=”yes” carousel_dots_inside=”yes” carousel_dot_padding=”5″ stage_padding=”0″ single_text=”under” single_overlay_opacity=”50″ single_overlay_anim=”no” single_text_anim=”no” single_image_anim=”no” single_reduced=”three_quarter” single_padding=”2″ single_title_semantic=”h4″ single_meta_custom_typo=”yes” single_meta_weight=”500″ single_icon=”fa fa-search3″ single_border=”yes” lbox_caption=”yes” no_double_tap=”yes” carousel_rtl=”” single_title_uppercase=”” single_title_bold=”” single_title_serif=”” onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” items=”eyI4ODY4X2kiOnsic2luZ2xlX3dpZHRoIjoiNCIsInNpbmdsZV9oZWlnaHQiOiI0In0sIjg4NjJfaSI6eyJzaW5nbGVfd2lkdGgiOiI0Iiwic2luZ2xlX2hlaWdodCI6IjQifSwiODg2MF9pIjp7InNpbmdsZV93aWR0aCI6IjQiLCJzaW5nbGVfaGVpZ2h0IjoiNCJ9LCIyNjIxOF9pIjp7InNpbmdsZV93aWR0aCI6IjQiLCJzaW5nbGVfaGVpZ2h0IjoiNCJ9LCIyNjIyNF9pIjp7InNpbmdsZV93aWR0aCI6IjQiLCJzaW5nbGVfaGVpZ2h0IjoiNCJ9LCIyNjIyMl9pIjp7InNpbmdsZV93aWR0aCI6IjQiLCJzaW5nbGVfaGVpZ2h0IjoiNCJ9LCIyNjIyOV9pIjp7InNpbmdsZV93aWR0aCI6IjQiLCJzaW5nbGVfaGVpZ2h0IjoiNCJ9fQ==” single_half_padding=”” single_no_background=”” uncode_shortcode_id=”152792″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”286056″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”182571″]After the dodo[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”210660″]Of course, it would be better not to let another iconic species of the island die out in the first place. The pretty Guimbeau’s day gecko grows to a maximum length of 15 centimetres. It scurries around on the branches and leaves of trees and bushes. The diurnal geckos have magnificent markings with a bright green base colour, intense orange to red spots and a bright blue neck. However, they have to contend with very similar problems to the giant pigeons – and therefore threaten to follow them into the extinction.

Man has also brought predators and competitors to Mauritius that the geckos are no match for. The oriental garden lizard and wolf snakes, introduced from India, proved to be particularly problematic. More recently, Madagascar has brought something like the final enemy of the small Mauritius day geckos to their island: their own monstrous relatives, in the form of the large Madagascar day gecko. It easily reaches twice its length and several times its mass, but colonises the same habitat. It’s clear who will prevail. Apart from the fact that the large day geckos simply eat the small ones with relish.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row unlock_row=”” row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”0″ back_color=”color-xsdn” back_image=”140766″ back_attachment=”scroll” parallax=”yes” overlay_color=”color-jevc” overlay_alpha=”30″ equal_height=”yes” gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ top_divider=”gradient” bottom_divider=”gradient” content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”162200″ back_color_type=”uncode-palette” overlay_color_type=”uncode-palette” row_height_pixel=”360px”][vc_column column_width_percent=”70″ position_vertical=”middle” align_horizontal=”align_center” gutter_size=”3″ style=”dark” overlay_alpha=”50″ radius=”sm” shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”122414″][vc_custom_heading css_animation=”bottom-t-top” animation_delay=”300″ uncode_shortcode_id=”791785″]‘But the dodo has shown how quickly a species can disappear – it didn’t take a hundred years for it to disappear.’[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”0″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”234961″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”684021″]© Citizen Conservation, KI-Rekonstruktion[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”1″ bottom_padding=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”464535″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=”142782″]Gone in a flash[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”192773″]Researchers assume that the Mauritius day geckos no longer have a long-term chance on their home island. This is because the small geckos are well suited to being kept in terrariums, where they reproduce prolifically. If they can be saved in human care over the next few decades, there is hope of returning them to ‘cleaned’ habitats in Mauritius one day. That something like this works has been proven on the neighbouring small island of Round Island, for example. There, native day geckos, as well as snakes and other lizards, have also been almost wiped out by invaders. Through painstaking work, it has been possible to free parts of the former habitat from them and protect them. Bred specimens were then reintroduced and are now ensuring a growing population. So we don’t have to stand idly by and watch as the Guimbeau’s day gecko succeeds the dodo.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”4″ overlay_alpha=”50″ equal_height=”yes” gutter_size=”0″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”174941″ row_height_pixel=”300 px”][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ back_image=”140808″ back_position=”left center” overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”4″ mobile_width=”7″ width=”1/2″ el_class=”inverted-device-order” uncode_shortcode_id=”969906″ mobile_height=”180px”][/vc_column][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ position_horizontal=”left” position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”3″ back_color=”color-lxmt” overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”4″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/2″ uncode_shortcode_id=”674740″ back_color_type=”uncode-palette”][vc_custom_heading text_color=”accent” heading_semantic=”h6″ text_size=”h6″ text_transform=”uppercase” uncode_shortcode_id=”784547″ text_color_type=”uncode-palette”]For breeders[/vc_custom_heading][vc_custom_heading text_size=”h3″ sub_lead=”small” subheading=”Keep in pairs or in groups of one male and two females.
