Once<\/span> a <\/span>year<\/span>, <\/span>Europe’s<\/span> zoo<\/span> community<\/span> meets<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> EAZA <\/span>conference<\/span> for<\/span> five<\/span> days<\/span> of<\/span> intensive <\/span>exchange<\/span>. More <\/span>than<\/span> 1,000 <\/span>people<\/span> made<\/span> the<\/span> journey<\/span> to<\/span> \u0141\u00f3d\u017a<\/span>, <\/span>Poland<\/span>, <\/span>this<\/span> year<\/span> to<\/span> discuss<\/span> the<\/span> status<\/span> of<\/span> their<\/span> conservation<\/span> breeding<\/span> programmes<\/span>, <\/span>exchange<\/span> ideas<\/span> on <\/span>new<\/span> developments<\/span> in <\/span>zoo<\/span> design and <\/span>share<\/span> their<\/span> activities<\/span> in <\/span>local<\/span> species<\/span> conservation<\/span> projects<\/span>. Citizen <\/span>Conservation<\/span> was <\/span>represented<\/span> by<\/span> Managing <\/span>Director<\/span> Bj\u00f6rn Encke and <\/span>Curator<\/span> Johannes Penner. This <\/span>year<\/span>, <\/span>they<\/span> did<\/span> not <\/span>give<\/span> any<\/span> presentations<\/span> of<\/span> their<\/span> own, but<\/span> instead<\/span> held<\/span> numerous<\/span> meetings<\/span> between<\/span> and <\/span>after<\/span> the<\/span> conference<\/span> blocks<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> were<\/span> packed<\/span> tightly<\/span> together<\/span> in <\/span>several<\/span> parallel <\/span>sessions<\/span> from<\/span> morning<\/span> to<\/span> evening<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”564096″ el_class=”text-larger”]This marathon session was interrupted by an afternoon and evening at the completely renovated <\/span>\u0141\u00f3d\u017a<\/span> Zoo. Side events like this are always welcome \u2013 it is quite an experience to spend hours strolling through a zoo and meeting different colleagues from zoos in Europe and around the world at each enclosure. The slide says it all: Navigating Cross-Cultural Challenges. And Tomasz Rusek from the EAZA office in Amsterdam is a gifted steersman when it comes to navigating the obstacles of cultural diversity in Europe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Working <\/span>together<\/span> despite<\/span> the<\/span> controversy<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exchange of information is one thing: which species are urgently needed, where are specific problems and solutions for one species or another, how is the political situation developing in the EU and in individual countries and regions, and what challenges does this pose for species conservation, research or communication on specific topics? Examples such as the public debate on the necessity and limits of population management show very clearly how great the differences within Europe are and how irreplaceable direct personal exchange is. While the prevailing opinion in Northern and Central Europe tends to be that it is necessary to control animal populations, whether in human care or in the wild, and that this may also require the killing of animals, this idea meets with little understanding among many people in other parts of Europe. This example illustrates how difficult it is to arrive at a common, scientifically sound strategy and voice in a diverse world. Furthermore, with such sensitive issues, even the smallest inaccuracies in translation can lead to unexpected misunderstandings and unrest. This makes it <\/span>all the more<\/span> reassuring \u2013 especially <\/span>with regard to<\/span> the USA \u2013 that discussions on such sensitive topics can still be conducted respectfully in Europe. <\/span>As long as<\/span> we can argue <\/span>in a friendly way<\/span> over a drink about the right way forward, the world is not yet lost. And unfortunately, that is <\/span>pretty good<\/span> news these days.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once a year, Europe’s zoo community meets at the EAZA conference for five days of intensive exchange. More than 1,000 people made the pilgrimage to \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, Poland, this year to exchange
