politics<\/a><\/p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”133911″][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1\/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”883863″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”105658″ el_class=”text-larger”]The <\/span>keeping<\/span> of<\/span> dangerous<\/span> exotic<\/span> animals<\/span> is<\/span> a <\/span>recurring<\/span> topic<\/span> of<\/span> discussion<\/span>, <\/span>as<\/span> was <\/span>the<\/span> case<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> summer<\/span> of<\/span> 2025 <\/span>following<\/span> a <\/span>bite<\/span> incident<\/span> involving<\/span> a <\/span>rattlesnake<\/span> at a private <\/span>animal<\/span> keeper’s<\/span> home<\/span>. <\/span>Although<\/span> such <\/span>incidents<\/span> are<\/span> fortunately<\/span> extremely<\/span> rare and <\/span>bear<\/span> no<\/span> relation<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> much<\/span> more<\/span> frequent <\/span>accidents<\/span> involving<\/span> generally<\/span> accepted<\/span> pets<\/span> or<\/span> even<\/span> road<\/span> traffic<\/span>, <\/span>it<\/span> is<\/span> right<\/span> to<\/span> minimise<\/span> potential <\/span>dangers<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> ci<\/span>tizens<\/span> as<\/span> far<\/span> as<\/span> possible. <\/span>However<\/span>, <\/span>other<\/span> interests<\/span> must<\/span> be<\/span> weighed<\/span> up<\/span> against<\/span> this<\/span>, such <\/span>as<\/span> animal<\/span> welfare<\/span> or<\/span> the<\/span> right<\/span> to<\/span> free<\/span> personal <\/span>development<\/span> for<\/span> people<\/span> who<\/span> are<\/span> seriously<\/span>, <\/span>passionately<\/span> and <\/span>knowledgeably<\/span> involved<\/span> in <\/span>keeping<\/span> venomous<\/span> snakes<\/span> or<\/span> other<\/span> dangerous<\/span> exotic<\/span> animals<\/span>. And \u2013 in <\/span>our<\/span> view<\/span> particularly<\/span> important<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>species<\/span> protection<\/span> aspects<\/span> must<\/span> also <\/span>be<\/span> taken<\/span> into<\/span> account<\/span>. The <\/span>other<\/span> federal<\/span> states<\/span> have<\/span> enacted<\/span> quite<\/span> different <\/span>laws<\/span>. In North Rhine-<\/span>Westphalia<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> \u2018Law on <\/span>the<\/span> Protection<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Citizenry<\/span> from<\/span> highly<\/span> venomous<\/span> animals<\/span> (<\/span>GifttierG<\/span> NRW)\u2019<\/span> was <\/span>introduced<\/span> on 1 <\/span>January<\/span> 2021. <\/span>It<\/span> is<\/span> the<\/span> most<\/span> restrictive<\/span> of<\/span> its<\/span> kind<\/span>, <\/span>providing<\/span> for<\/span> a <\/span>complete<\/span> ban<\/span> on <\/span>the<\/span> private <\/span>keeping<\/span> of<\/span> many<\/span> species<\/span> classified<\/span> as<\/span> dangerous<\/span> and <\/span>only<\/span> allowing<\/span> existing<\/span> stocks<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> protected<\/span>. The <\/span>law<\/span> expires<\/span> on 31 <\/span>December<\/span> 2025, and <\/span>discussions<\/span> are<\/span> currently<\/span> underway<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> political<\/span> level<\/span> as<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> extent<\/span> to<\/span> which<\/span> the<\/span> regulation<\/span> should<\/span> be<\/span> continued<\/span> or<\/span> amended<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”133911″][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1\/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”883863″][vc_custom_heading text_size=”h3″ uncode_shortcode_id=”417691″]Species<\/span> protection<\/span> also <\/span>for<\/span> dangerous<\/span> animals<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”829913″ el_class=”text-larger”]Citizen <\/span>Conservation<\/span> believes<\/span> that<\/span> private <\/span>individuals<\/span> should<\/span> be<\/span> allowed<\/span> to<\/span> keep<\/span> dangerous<\/span> animals<\/span>, <\/span>provided<\/span> they<\/span> comply<\/span> with<\/span> reasonable<\/span> requirements<\/span>, <\/span>as<\/span> there<\/span> are<\/span> numerous<\/span> highly<\/span> endangered<\/span> species<\/span> among<\/span> these<\/span> animals<\/span> for<\/span> which<\/span> the<\/span> expertise<\/span> and <\/span>husbandry<\/span> capacities<\/span> of<\/span> private <\/span>individuals<\/span> can<\/span> be<\/span> of<\/span> particular<\/span> importance<\/span> for<\/span> their<\/span> conservation<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> therefore<\/span> consider<\/span> it<\/span> irresponsible<\/span> and <\/span>contrary<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> goals<\/span> of<\/span> comprehensive<\/span> species<\/span> conservation<\/span> to<\/span> ban<\/span> private <\/span>husbandry<\/span> altogether<\/span>.
